The Outdoor Research Deluxe Spring Headnet is a no-see-um headnet that gives you reliable insect protection without the use of chemicals. The collapsible, Spring Ring metal hoop holds the mesh away from your face. The larger size accommodates wide-brimmed hats and sombreros. A drawcord neck closure prevents the tiniest pests from entering your air space and it collapses into a built in pocket for easy storage. One size fits most. Sizing (Measure from center of forehead around fullest part of head): Inches 22 1/2 - 24, cm 57-61. Weight 2.2oz.

mosquito head net

bought this for my daughter to take on a canoe trip. it seemed like overkill vs the ones that were one quarter the price but her trip leader recommended it because the spring ring keeps it from blowing into your face. you can wear a baseball style hat with the less expensive versions but that doesn't really prevent the net from blowing into your face. this one easily folds into a figure 8 allowing it to pack into a small pouch. if my daughter comes back without looking like she's had the measles, we'll both be happy.

It looks funny, yeah, but it works

Walking around your yard wearing one of these does make you look like a beekeeper or astronaut or something, but it really works. It's like a portable screened porch for your head.

It's big enough to fit over the brim of a man's Panama hat. The metal ring keeps the net suspended evenly. The drawstring keeps insects from finding their way underneath.

Okay, it's great for gnats, or any other insects that zero in on the face. The problem is how to protect the rest of your body from biting insects. If you're looking at this product, chances are you're trying to avoid chemical repellents. I find that just wearing loose fitting, long sleeved clothing (made of breathable fabrics like cotton) helps a lot. The idea with loose clothing is not just to provide comfort in warm weather, but to keep the biting insects from reaching your skin. If they're aggressive you can always spray the clothing with a naturally based repellent like Cutter Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent instead of spraying it directly on skin.

The headnet interferes slightly with vision -- after all, you are looking through insect netting. But it's not something that would interfere with most yard and garden chores.

Getting it back in its convenient attached case is a bit of a trick -- the metal spring ring has to be twisted and doubled. I don't bother. I just leave the rig on my gardening hat all summer.
