I picked up a pair of these before my wife and I headed into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota. When you need to carry all of your gear over portages (hikes between lakes), every ounce counts.
The thing that impressed me most about the bowls was the size--around 7" across (without the handle). I had ordered them sight unseen, so I was expecting something a little larger than a sierra cup. They're big enough that I can use them as deep plates--plenty of room for a full meal, not just a scoop or two of rehydrated food. In addition to their size, I was impressed by their weight (or lack thereof). At about 5 oz, it's like carrying next to nothing.
The handle is a great addition, allowing the bowl to be held one-handed with ease. Having the handle helps keep more of your hand away form a hot bowl.
That said, it is thin stainess, so heat transfers through quickly. I typically have some fingerless gloves with me, and they are well suited to holding a bowl of hot food.
This bowl was designed to keep your pack weight down, and it will do just that. The trade off with weight is strength. If you're careful with your gear, this bowl should last you for years. If you tend to be heavy-handed with your gear, or typically cram it all into your pack (versus exhibiting Tetris-like packing skills), you might want to consider a thicker, sturdier bowl. I wanted something ultra-light, so this one fit the bill for me--FIVE STARS!
